The Story
I was watching an NBA basketball game being played in Canada. When the American national anthem was played our best friends and neighbors, Canadians, booed. I had to let that sink in.
Canadians. Booed!
I understood the sentiment and empathized but also wanted to explain something. We are a country of about 316 million people with pride in the lofty ideals that we inherited from our founding. Those ideals are not always well represented by those who represent us.
But we are still here and He Is Not Us.
Please bear with us.
We will be right back.

As we travel the world and hear concerns that the United States has lost its way — becoming belligerent, unpredictable, selfish, or short-sighted — we want you to know this:
We hear you.
We understand.
And we’re doing everything we can to fix it.
He is not us.
What "He is not us" means
We Hear You
People around the world have raised concerns that the United States seems less stable, less predictable, and less aligned with the values we once championed.
We hear these concerns. They are real. We don’t dismiss them.
We Understand
We understand why allies are uneasy, why trust feels shaken, why the example we once set feels dimmer.
We Are Working to Fix It
Millions of Americans are committed to restoring trust, integrity, and decency.
He Is Not Us
No single individual defines a nation.
No one person represents the character of the United States.
We are all still here too.
